Sparx accompanies Spyro throughout his adventures. Since his debut in ''[[Spyro the Dragon (game)|Spyro the Dragon]]'', Sparx has appeared in nearly every ''Spyro'' game as Spyro's protector. Without Sparx, Spyro is susceptible to being defeated in one hit, but if Spyro is with Sparx, he can withstand a few more hits.

In ''[[Crash Team Rumble]]'', Sparx is a living item that accompanies only Spyro. The yellow dragonfly also comes with his own set of customizable skins that can be unlocked through Spyro's character progression and challenges. During competitive matches, Sparx plays his original role by collecting nearby relics and wumpa fruit for Spyro. He also changes color depending on the amount of health Spyro has and disappears entirely if his health is low, but will return when Spyro regains health overtime.
