In very early development, Spyro was depicted as green, but the development team noticed that he would blend into the grass in the levels too much. In ''[[Spyro the Dragon (game)|Spyro the Dragon]]'', Spyro was first seen knocking a [[sheep]] around during a live telvision interview between [[Astor]], [[Lindar]] and the Dragon News Network crew. One of the viewers, a large orc-like creature named [[Gnasty Gnorc]], was insulted by the comments said about him by [[Lindar]]. In retaliation, he used a magic spell to crystallize all the dragons in the Dragon Kingdom into crystal statues. Spyro, being a smaller dragon, avoided Gnasty's spell and sets with Sparx to rescue the frozen dragons and recover the [[treasure]] that was stolen by Gnasty Gnorc's minions. Spyro has to travel through the five Dragon Worlds, [[Artisans]], [[Peace Keepers]], [[Magic Crafters]], [[Beast Makers]], and lastly [[Dream Weavers]], before he can reach the final area, [[Gnorc Gnexus]], where he must battle and defeat Gnasty Gnorc. During a seemingly endless period of rainy weather, Spyro and Sparx decided that they needed a vacation from the Dragon Worlds, to somewhere warm and sunny. Spyro notices the portal to Dragon Shores nearby and recalls not being there since defeating Gnasty Gnorc, so he and Sparx decide to go to the vacation spot to escape the rainy weather. However, instead of arriving at the Dragon Shores beach, Spyro and Sparx arrived in a world called [[Avalar]]. Their travel was redirected by the [[Professor]], [[Elora]], [[Zoe]], and [[Hunter]], who were looking for a dragon. Suddenly, the group encounter a dictator named [[Ripto]] and his two bodyguards, [[Crush]] and [[Gulp]]. Ripto is furious that Spyro was brought to Avalar because he hates dragons. When Ripto leaves to the first [[Home World]], [[Summer Forest]], Elora gives Spyro a [[Guidebook]] to help him on his journey.

Unlike the first game, Spyro starts his journey within a realm called [[Glimmer]], where he has to help out the [[Gemcutter]]s. Along the way, Spyro meets a [[fairy]] named [[Zoe]], who automatically saves the game progress throughout certain parts of Spyro's journey. Like in ''Spyro the Dragon'', Spyro has to collect treasure lying around, but this time he needs them throughout his journey to pay a greedy bear named [[Moneybags]] for his services in order to progress. In the case of Glimmer, Spyro needs to pay 100 Gems to Moneybags for him to drop a bridge so that Spyro can progress. After exiting the Glimmer realm, Spyro meets up with Elora once more in Summer Forest, where she asks Spyro to recover the [[Talisman]]s around Avalar, as they are powerful enough to defeat Ripto. Once Spyro has collected the six Talismans of Summer Forest, he can continue into [[Crush's Dungeon]] to fight Ripto's minion, [[Crush]]. Once Crush has been defeated, Spyro can access the second Home World, [[Autumn Plains]], where he must collect eight more Talismans, making a total of 14, in order to fight [[Gulp]] at [[Gulp's Overlook]].

Once Spyro has defeated Gulp, and Ripto plummeting into a chasm as a result of the battle, Elora arrives to congratulate the dragon for his victory. Believing there to be no sign of Ripto, Elora and a few of the fairies reward Spyro with a chair and umbrella to relax on for a vacation. Elora then goes to [[Winter Tundra]] to check on the Professor, who is reconstructing a [[Super Portal]] to send Spyro back home, and he later decides to follow Elora there. When Spyro arrives at the Winter Tundra, he learns from Elora that Ripto is still alive and that he stole the power crystal, which is necessary to power the Super Portal. Spyro is now asked to collect the [[Orb]]s, including in earlier realms, as they are also necessary for powering the Super Portal and to fight Ripto. Once Spyro has obtained all 40 Orbs, he can go battle Ripto in his [[Ripto's Arena|arena]].

At the arena, Zoe informed Spyro that the Professor was working on new types of Orbs to use against Ripto. During the battle, both Spyro and Ripto used the power from the Orbs to attack each other that escalated into Ripto using one Orb to deploy a large, mechanized version of Gulp. When Spyro destroyed it, Ripto used another Orb to destroy the arena floor while creating a large mecha-pteradactyl to help finish Spyro off. Spyro managed to defeat the mecha-bird in an aerial duel, and both it and Ripto fell to their demise in a pool of lava. Spyro was then able to go to Dragon Shores to begin his much needed vacation.

In the original [[PlayStation]] version's epilogue, Spyro is featured a few times: having a hot tub party with the [[Chef]] from [[Sunny Beach]], missing his chance with Elora while riding in a Dragon Shores love boat, and being confronted by a herd of black sheep.

While the dragons, including Spyro, were asleep after celebrating the [[Year of the Dragon]] festival, a young sorceress rabbit named [[Bianca]] and a troop of [[Rhynoc]]s steal the [[Dragon Egg]]s. Spyro and the others only wake up when they find Bianca stealing the last remaining Dragon Egg. Just before Spyro and Hunter could stop Bianca, she managed to take the egg back through a hole to the [[Forgotten Realms]], which is where the dragons formerly lived. Bianca stole the Dragon Eggs for her mistress, the [[Sorceress]], who plans to use them for a spell to receive immortality. Meanwhile, because the other dragons are too big to enter the hole, they ask Spyro to enter, which he does shortly after Hunter falls down. This begins Spyro's journey to recover the 150 stolen Dragon Eggs.

In the Forgotten Realms, there are four Home Worlds for Spyro to explore, in order of [[Sunrise Spring Home]], [[Midday Gardens Home]], [[Evening Lake Home]], and lastly [[Midnight Mountain Home]]. In each Home World, Spyro recruits four new allies, in order of [[Sheila]], [[Sgt. Byrd]], [[Bentley]], and [[Agent 9]]. At first, Spyro finds each of them being held prisoner by Moneybags in the respective Home Worlds, at the behest of the Sorceress. After paying enough Gems to Moneybags, Spyro not only frees the ally but also unlocks a realm that features them as a playable character instead of Spyro.

When Spyro and Sparx arrive in Midnight Mountain Home, Bianca realized how far her mistress would go to achieve power. She betrayed the Sorceress and defected to Spyro's side. Later, when Spyro has obtained at least 100 Dragon Eggs, he is able to enter the [[Sorceress's Lair]]. After a long battle, Spyro defeated the Sorceress, although she had not been entirely defeated.

Later, once Spyro has obtained 149 Dragon Eggs and 20,000 Gems, he can access the [[Super Bonus Round]] to fight the Sorceress once more. Here, Spyro manages to use his spaceship to ultimately defeat the Sorceress, earning him the final Dragon Egg, which hatches a pair of Siamese pair of dragons named Yin Yang.

====''Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly''====
In ''[[Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly]]'', during the conclusion of the Year of the Dragon festival, Spyro was having a celebratory party with Hunter and Bianca, overseeing the recently rescued baby dragons receiving [[dragonflies]] of their own. Suddenly, Ripto and his goons, Crush and Gulp, crashed the party and used his magic to steal and scatter the dragonflies across the land to render the dragons defenseless. Spyro was also separated from his best pal, Sparx the Dragonfly, thanks to Ripto's spell. Fortunately, both were able to find each other inside the nearby castle and reunited in time for Bianca to temporarily grant Spyro the ability to breathe more than one element. Spyro then Embarks on an adventure across the realm, learning new abilities from the [[Spirit Dragon]], to recover the dragonflies and stop Ripto.

In ''[[Spyro: A Hero's Tail]]'', a former Dragon Elder named [[Red]] is planting [[Dark Gems]] across the land to plunge them into darkness. Spyro discovers this and sets out on stopping Red and his minions, which included a revived Gnasty Gnorc and an evil mermaid named [[Ineptune]]. With the help of Hunter, Sgt. Byrd and a new friend named [[Blink|Blink the Mole]], Spyro made his way to Red's [[Volcanic Isle|final hideout]] and defeated him.

In ''[[Spyro: Shadow Legacy]]'', Spyro and Sparx returned to the Dragon Realms after vacationing with their friends in preparation for school, only for the world to be plunged into chaos by a new force of evil. They soon discovered that a villain named the [[Sorcerer]] was attempting to rule the world using dark, shadowy mirrors of each realm (called the [[Shadow Realm|Shadow Realms]]). With the help of a Dragon Elder named [[Sensei]], Spyro learned the art of [[Dragon Kata]] and the use of magic from the other elders, [[Tomas (A Hero's Tail)|Tomas]], [[Titan (A Hero's Tail)|Titan]], [[Astor (A Hero's Tail)|Astor]], [[Magnus (A Hero's Tail)|Magnus]] and [[Cho-Lei]]. 

After saving the Dragon Realms and Avalar from the Shadow Realm, Spyro found Red in the Forgotten Worlds. After defeating him, it was revealed that Red was only a pawn in the Sorcerer's plan to destroy the world. Red, freed from the Sorcerer's influence, helps Spyro defeat the Sorcerer by teaching him a spell that is needed to damage the villain. After Spyro made his way to the Sorcerer’s lair, the Sorcerer revealed himself to be a purple dragon like Spyro, but transformed himself into a monstrous dragon to engage the young dragon in combat. Spyro emerged the victor, and the Sorcerer fled before he lost his power completely. Spyro returned to the Dragon Realms, where a parade was thrown in his honor, with Red being welcomed back into the Dragon Realms and made peace with the other Elders (except Titan). Afterwards, Spyro and his friends began preparing themselves for the Sorcerer's next move.

Upon returning from his vacation, Spyro discover that the Dragon Realms has grown icy cold (even his own fire-breath frozen into breath of ice). Ripto has returned, and he has invaded the Dragon Realms, this time to steal the [[Fireflies (Season of Flame)|fireflies]], creatures that give the dragons their firebreath. While Bianca was able to restore Spyro's normal flame breath with the magic of a few fireflies, Spyro had to search throughout the Realms to recover the other missing fireflies, using both his normal breath (as well as his newfound ice powers) to defeat enemies, recover the fireflies, and once again take on and drive Ripto out.

Ripto attempted another invasion and was successfully able to take over the Professor's laboratory through a mishap. In ''[[The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning]]'', Spyro is a dragon of prophecy, a rare purple dragon born once every ten generations. As an egg, the temple where the unborn Spyro rests is attacked by the forces of the Dark Master who are intent on destroying all the dragon eggs. Ignitus, one of the eggs' guardians, escapes with the purple dragon's egg, leaving it to drift downriver into a swamp, hoping for the best. The egg is discovered by a family of dragonflies, and upon hatching, Spyro is adopted into the family and raised as one of their own, alongside Sparx, a young dragonfly born the same day.
One day, after coming under attack by strange foes and discovering that he can breathe fire, Spyro is told that he is not a dragonfly himself but a stranger from a distant land; Spyro decides to leave the swamp in search of his true home; Sparx, though reluctant at first, decides to follow along. Spyro is pursued by hostile forces, but eventually comes into contact with a distraught Ignitus, who although pleased that Spyro is alive, fears that with the Dragon Temple under occupation by their enemy, and led by an enemy dragon named Cynder, their war is already lost.
Spyro convinces Ignitus to lead him to the Temple, and is able to drive Cynder's forces out, after which Ignitus tells Spyro more about their war against the dark armies, offers Spyro some training in the art of the fire element, and then sends Spyro off to rescue three other dragons from Cynder's forces. One by one, Spyro clashes with Cynder's armies, rescues the three other dragons, while acquiring new skills and training along the way. It is learned that Cynder has been draining the dragons' power into crystals, and also that Cynder herself is merely a pawn serving the Dark Master -- Cynder originally being born from the same brood of eggs as Spyro, but are not siblings, as said by the Sierra production crew. After freeing the final Guardian, Terrador, Ignitus is captured by Cynder. Spyro attempts to fight Cynder, but Cynder succeeds in draining Ignitus's power of fire into a crystal, and escapes to the sealed realm of the Dark Master. Ignitus fears that it is too late to stop her, but Spyro pursues Cynder and forces a showdown, eventually using all of his power in a final attack which defeats her, purging her of the Dark Master's influence and returning her to her true form, a young dragon the same size as Spyro. The realm begins to collapse in on itself; Sparx insists on making a quick exit but Spyro declares he will not leave Cynder behind with the Dark Master; though barely, Spyro is able to grab Cynder and escape safely.

''[[The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night]]'' continues from where the first game ended, with a new villain, Gaul the Ape King, arriving at the Well of Souls in an effort to usher in a new age of darkness. Spyro must unlock the secrets behind a series of strange visions that he is having and find the power to defeat this terrifying new force. When fighting Gaul, Spyro falls through the Well of Souls. This, combined with the Well's beam hitting the celestial moon from right underneath causes Spyro to become possessed by the Dark Master, transforming him into "Dark Spyro". After defeating Gaul, he was unable to control his emotions and struggled to get out of his dark state until Cynder saves him, knocking him free from the Dark Master's influence.

In ''[[The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon]]'', Spyro, Sparx, and Cynder emerge from the crystal. They meet Hunter, and learn that the Dark Master, Malefor, has returned. Malefor himself is a purple dragon like Spyro, but intends to cover the world in darkness and ultimately destroy it. Malefor nearly succeeds, but Spyro and Cynder confront and defeat him. Spyro seemingly sacrifices himself to repair Malefor's damage and Cynder chooses to die with him, telling him she loves him. Their fate is left ambiguous, but they are seen flying through the air together at the end of the game.

Crash and Spyro are alerted of their respective worlds' predicament and are sent to get rid of the disguised Riptocs. Crash and Spyro eventually encounter each other at [[Dragon Castles]], believing each other to be a disguised Riptoc, but soon discover that they both have been tricked and decide to team up against Ripto and Cortex. Eventually, Spyro, Sparx, Crash, and [[Aku Aku]] defeated both Cortex and Ripto. The two heroes thank each other as the games end with a photo of Crash having Spyro in a friendly headlock.

With their help, Dark Spyro was sent back to the dragon realm but Gnasty Gnorc escaped and remained at large in Crash's dimension. ''Spyro the Dragon'' series consists of six mainline games in the original series, four GBA portable games and ''The Legend of Spyro'' trilogy. Although the sixth game, ''Shadow Legacy'', was released for Nintendo DS instead for major platforms, it is considered to be a part of the main series storyline. Spyro also appeared in ''Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure'' and its sequels, but the franchise is itself completely different and standalone despite having some few similarities, as Spyro is no longer the sole main character and does not have a Spyro banner from the solo series.

Spyro is a mischievous hero who doesn't shy away from roasting a couple of bad guys. He is extremely curious and rarely cautious, which can get him into trouble.<ref>Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! manual, page 8</ref> He is fearless, having faced opponents larger than himself without showing a hint of fear.

In the first ''Spyro the Dragon'', Spyro had a mischievous and bratty personality. Through much of his adventure, he was mostly focused on defeating [[Gnasty Gnorc]]. The two sequels, ''Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!'' and ''Spyro: Year of the Dragon'', feature Spyro as less cocky and more levelheaded. He has minimal interest in love, as he lost his chance with Elora in ''Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!'' and regarded the sight of Hunter and Bianca falling in love as a "sad sight".

In ''Spyro: A Hero's Tail'', while still willing to save the world from evil, Spyro was given a cocky personality, even more than the first game. His arrogance was also increased, so much that he was willing to deny help to those he believed they wouldn't reward him. This was retained for subsequent games. 

In the ''Spyro Reignited Trilogy'', Spyro's overall personality was changed to be more mature and friendly compared to his depiction in the original trilogy. His initial interactions with Elora is significantly more friendly, almost playful in tone. In addition, his interactions with the various dragons in the first game have been significantly lightened, and Spyro's tone has been made softer.

In ''The Legend of Spyro'' series, Spyro's personality is largely different than the main ''Spyro the Dragon'' series. Spyro is young and compassionate towards others and he is always willing to help them no matter what happens. Spyro doesn't ask for rewards and is just happy to be a big help to those in danger. He even saves Cynder from being destroyed when the area he fought her in was collapsing.

===Physical appearance===
Spyro is a purple dragon with both yellow horns and wings, and a light-colored belly. Starting with ''Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!'', Spyro's rendered art displays a ridge of yellow spikes down his back, although this was not reflected by Spyro's in-game model until ''Spyro: A Hero's Tail''.

===Abilities===

Spyro has two main methods of attack: charging at enemies with his horns and breathing fire. He can use his developing wings to glide but needs to utilize certain powerups to fly around freely. He is only able to fly freely when he enters [[speedways]]. In ''Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy'', Spyro learns how to fly short differences by himself, and in the opening screen, Spyro is also shown to be flying independently. Certain sidequests in ''Spyro: Attack of the Rhynocs'' depict Spyro with the ability to fly outside of speedways or special stages without the use of power-ups.

In ''Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!'', Spyro learns new abilities during his adventure through Avalar from [[Moneybags]] in exchange for treasure. This includes [[Swimming|the ability to swim underwater]], where Spyro can charge at enemies but can only blow [[Bubble Breath|bubbles]] instead of fire. He also learns to [[Climbing|climb up certain walls with his claws]] and the [[headbash]] maneuver. Spyro retains these abilities in later games. In ''[Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly'', after acquiring enough [[runes]], Spyro can use his [[Wing Shield|wings as a shield]] that can deflect certain magic projectiles fired by enemies.

In ''Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly'', in addition to his fire breath, Spyro can collect runes that can allow him to breathe [[Electric Breath|lightning]], [[Ice Breath|ice]], and bubbles that he can use to catch lost baby [[dragonflies]]. In ''Spyro: A Hero's Tail'', Spyro rescues fairies that grant him the power to breathe electricity, [[Water Breath|water]], and ice. 

In ''Spyro: Shadow Legacy'', Spyro learns from his Dragon Elders the power to cast various magic spells. He was also taught by [[Sensei]] the art of [[Dragon Kata]] to battle the [[Shadow Minions|creatures]] of the [[Shadow Realm]].

In ''The Legend of Spyro'' series, Spyro can breathe and manipulate fire, ice, electricity, and earth. Once he learns to use all four elements, he can use a fifth energy-based element known as "Aether", which only purple dragons can use. In ''The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night'', Spyro acquires the "Dragon Time" ability, which allows him to slow down time. Spyro can fly infinitely in ''The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon'', having become a teenager, and is also playable as [[Dark Spyro]] when consumed by [[Dark Aether]].

==Relationships==
===Sparx===
In the original series, Spyro and Sparx have been best friends ever since they were still in eggs. Sparx follows Spyro and acts as his health indicator, and helps him collect treasure scattered throughout the game world. If Sparx disappears, Spyro will be left vulnerable, but Spyro can replenish Sparx by finding [[butterflies]] for him to eat, which are usually acquired by attacking [[Fodder|smaller animals]] such as sheep.

In ''The Legend of Spyro'' series, Spyro and Sparx were almost like brothers, as Spyro was adopted by dragonflies at a young age. When Spyro found out that he was adopted, Sparx followed him to find out the truth about his past. Spyro and Sparx may have their differences such as Spyro occasionally gets annoyed by Sparx's sarcastic comments and Sparx being annoyed by Spyro's decisions of choosing a path of which he thinks could lead to danger, the two are almost never seen without each other.

===Dragon Elders===
Spyro generally respects the older dragons, who are also his elders, but is impatient with more senior ones and often tries to leave as they are talking. His impatience was toned down in the ''Reignited Trilogy''.

===Gnasty Gnorc===
After the dragons were turned to crystal by Gnasty Gnorc, Spyro gained a great disdain for the Gnorc king and was determined to bring him down, occasionally rambling to his fellow dragons about wanting to torch Gnasty. After finally defeating him, Spyro admits that Gnasty was a worthy opponent despite his misguided nature. 

===Hunter ===
Hunter is one of Spyro's close friends<ref>Spyro: Year of the Dragon Manual, page 12</ref>, often partaking in friendly competitions each each other. Initially, both Spyro and Hunter had a rocky start when the dragon was brought to Avalar. The cheetah feared dragons at first after reading about them in the Professor's book, which describes them as much more dangerous than Ripto. This fear turned to surprise and disbelief when he first laid eyes on Spyro, a small young dragon. Over the course of Spyro's journey through Avalar, Hunter grew impressed with Spyro's prowess after challenging him in many sidequest activites and the two became friends.

In ''Spyro: Year of the Dragon'', after Hunter fell in love with Bianca, Spyro believed he lost Hunter, a noble warrior, to "the plague of love". Fortunately this wasn't the case as Hunter still retained his friendship with Spyro since he was concerned about his well-being during his fight against the Sorceress.

===Elora===
When Spyro met Elora in Glimmer, they didn't formally introduce themselves until Spyro made it to the Summer Forest homeworld. Elora truly believed that Spyro would be the one to end Ripto's tyranny over Avalar and did whatever she could to aid him during his adventure, with Spyro appreciating her help. When Spyro finally defeated Ripto in [[Winter Tundra]], Elora personally rewarded Spyro with a kiss on the forehead. In the original epilogue of ''Ripto's Rage!'', Spyro missed his chance with Elora on the Love Boat ride as he was busy seeing the sights, but the two remained friends.

=== Crash Bandicoot===
Spyro initially saw Riptocs disguised as Crash Bandicoot wrecking havoc across the Dragon Worlds. This caused him to see the bandicoot as an enemy that needed to be stopped. When both he and Crash finally came across each other, a battle ensued with both sides discovering that they were deceived by their archenemies, Ripto and Dr. Neo Cortex. Spyro then joined forces with Crash and Aku Aku to take down their respective enemies, save their friends and their worlds. At the end of their adventure, Spyro and Crash parted ways on friendlier terms, ending with Crash having Spyro in a friendly headlock. They have even crossed paths again in several other ''Crash Bandicoot'' game titles, such as ''Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled'', and ''Crash Bandicoot: On The Run!''. Their close friendship is akin to bash brothers, both engaging in friendly competitive tournaments and stopping bad guys together.

===Ember===
Ember is acquaintances with Spyro but mostly dreams of marrying him and insists that Spyro likes her, much to the latter's dismay. In ''Shadow Legacy'', Ember falls in love with an armadillo named [[Bandit]] and she never "flirts" with Spyro again afterwards.

===Ignitus===
In ''The Legend of Spyro'' series, Spyro shares a strong "father-son" relationship with [[Ignitus]]. Usually when Spyro doesn't have much confidence in himself, Ignitus believes that he will succeed in his destiny to restore peace into the world. Upon Ignitus' captivity by Cynder, Spyro felt guilty when he failed to save him. However, after Terrador's training sessions, he and Sparx go after him. During Malefor's reign, Ignitus leads Spyro and a now redeemed Cynder to confront the Dark Master to the burned lands where he uses up all of his powers to clear the path. Spyro, shocked in horror, transforms into "Dark Spyro" (a form channeled by Malefor through Spyro's emotions) and attempts to rescue him, only to be stopped and calmed down by Cynder.
