Well of Souls

The Mountain of Malefor, also known as the Well of Souls, was the location that was the Dark Master's first fortress as well as his prison.

The Mountain of Malefor is a mountain where Malefor was exiled by the dragon elders when he had grown evil for power. He soon created an army of Apes to defeat the dragons and taught them how to artificially harness the power of the gems, which are the Dragons' lifeforce. In his seclusion, his malice was so great, that it split the Earth and created a pit of despair called the Mountain of Malefor, also called the Well of Souls, where he was later imprisoned. While his spirit was imprisoned in the Mountain of Malefor, his essence was trapped in Convexity. The Mountain cracked, making a pit of dispair where all the unruly souls of the world could go to rest. On the Night of Eternal Darkness, all those souls are freed from the pit and walk freely amongst the halls of the mountain during the eclipse only for a short while. However, a poweful spirit like Malefor, is able to escape the Well of Souls when the Night of Eternal Darkness occurs, after his essence was freed from Convexity by Cynder.

In The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night, Spyro ventures to the Well of Souls to save Cynder from the Ape King, Gaul, and also try to stop Malefor from escaping the Mountain. After he defeats Gaul, the Lunar Alignment used to free Dark Master passes and the mountain began to crumble, trapping Spyro, Cynder, and Sparx. In an effort to save them all, Spyro encased them in crystal using his Time Fury, protecting them as the mountain crumbles around them. They are later seen sleeping inside the crystal within the ruins of the mountain, with Hunter of Avalar overlooking them nearby. Shortly after their disappearance from the Guardians, Malefor finally escapes from the Well of Souls and begins to plague the world in darkness.

In The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon, the remains of the mountain can be seen briefly in the beginning scene as Grublins ventured into the ruins and freed Spyro and Cynder from their three-year sleep, chaining them together to be sacrificed to the Golem under Malefor's orders.
