Apes are soldiers in service of the Dark Master, Malefor
Description
Apes are ugly, filthy, and dim witted, but they make good soldiers. Their size varies, aparently by rank. And also they are clothes and colors depend on the environment. The small ones are soldiers. The Medium ones are leaders. And the large ones are commanders.
Service to the Dark Master
After the Dark Master was cast out of the Dragon Realms,he built a army of Apes and thought them how to artificialy harness the power of the gems,the Dragons lifesource.The Apes served as the army for the Dark Master.Their king was Gaul.His army's job was to fight battles againts the dragons,win battles in order to gain ground,occupate the Dragon Realms and destroy Spyro's egg.
Attack on the Dragon Temple
Gauls forces infiltrated the Dragon Temple and destroyed the dragon eggs,but Spyro's was saved by Ignitus.The Dark Master was also needed a dragon who was born on the Year of the Dragon to free him from the Well of Souls.Cynder's egg was captured. Cynder was raised in total darkness and she became a cruel and sadistic general of his army.
The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning
Apes first apeared in this game when they captured Sparx. Spyro killed them and freed Sparx. Spyro,along with Ignitus wiped out all the apes that were inside the Dragon Temple. From that point on the apes would become the main enemy you would encounter. They apear in Dante's Freezer, Tall Plains, Munitions Forge and finally Cynder's Lair.
The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night
Apes appear in the second part of the trilogy in on several occasions, but you do not fight them primarily. The first one was when they launched a all out attack on the Dragon Temple, but Spyro and the guardians foiled their plans. They also appear on the Pirate Ship and the last occasion is in the end,on the Mountain of Malefor.
The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon
In Dawn of the Dragons, the cheetah hermit in the Valley of Avalar tells the ghouls that attacked Spyro and Cynder are the apes. According to him, they only served Malefor because they were greedy, and wanted his power, and because they showed no loyalty, Malefor turned them into ghouls. They appear as skeletons.
