Dragonfly
Template:Characterbox Dragonflies are recurring creatures in the Spyro series. A number of dragonflies appear throughout the Spyro the Dragon series, including Spyro's sidekick, Sparx. In the Classic series, they all talk in a kazoo-like voice.
Sparx
Throughout the Original series, Spyro is accompanied by a small yellow dragonfly named Sparx, who acts as Spyro's living health meter. Most dragonfly attributes that are known are from Sparx.
Spyro the Dragon series
Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly
The role of Dragonflies as a species is expanded upon in Enter the Dragonfly, and are cricual part of the Dragon society. Whenever a Dragon is born, they will receive a Dragonfly to protect them. There are 90 dragonflies who appear throughout Enter the Dragonfly, all of which are scattered around the Dragon Realms by Ripto in an effort to weaken the Dragons. They are shown to be very shy creatures who will fly away when Spyro approaches them, only giving up the chase when they are captured with Bubble Breath.
Spyro: A Hero's Tail
Sparx appeared as a health bar once again. It appeared that not only do dragonflies (referring to Sparx) have the normal kazoo voice, but they can also talk. It also revealed that dragonflies are the only ones who can use certain items, such as lock picks. Players can also buy upgrades for Sparx from Moneybags such as holding 3 lock-picks at one time and being able to withstand an extra hit (red after green).
The Legend of Spyro series
In The Legend of Spyro, only three dragonflies were shown, Sparx and his parents, Flash and Nina, however, they appear to be much different, and they're shown to be having a pair of hands compared to the original series. If we reference to Sparx, we can see that dragonflies, in the Legend series, do not change colour once hit, and Sparx also doesn't collect gems or have any special abilities. All Sparx does is fly around with Spyro and appear as a sidekick.
However, dragonflies appear much more intelligent; they speak fluently without any evidence of any kazoo and they are more human-like. They grow up with their parents and aren't chosen as a protection product for Dragons. The Dragonflies seem to have been neutral during the war between the Dragons and The Dark Master's army.
The Apes also capture dragonflies to use them as lanterns when navigating through the Swamp, as evident when the Ape Leader who attacked Spyro trapped Sparx inside a small cage resembling a lantern. Spyro soon rescued him from being used as a lantern and from being separated.
The Legend of Spyro 3D
According to the plot sypnosis of the cancelled film, the peaceful dragonflies played a role in keeping Spyro's egg safe when it was being hunted. As the dragonflies were very hard to find, Ignitus gave Spyro's egg to the dragonflies to keep it safe, and they raised Spyro as one of their own. However, their village was attacked one day and Spyro was found in the process. After Spyro drove off the attackers away with his newfound abilities, the dragonflies told Spyro that he wasn't a dragonfly, but a dragon who carries the role of being part of a great prophecy that will bring peace to all the land.
Skylanders series
In Skylanders, Sparx is the only dragonfly who is revealed so far, but is a magic item helping out the Skylanders. He attacks enemies by blasting fireballs, and when the enemy is defeated, they turn into butterflies for the Skylander to eat to regain their health.
Trivia
- In Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, every dragonfly earned through a task or challenge is blue.
- In the cutscenes in Spyro 2, Sparx talks by making humming sounds instead of talking by sounding like a kazoo. You can also here the humming sounds while Sparx snaps a butterfly or grabs a gem.
