Ignitus is a Fire Guardian Dragon of the Legend of Spyro series. He is the Leader of the four Dragon Guardians. He serves as the father-figure to Spyro and provides him with words of wisdom and leads him on the right path.

Personality and Abilities

As the Leader of the Guardians, Ignitus has unquestionable ability, second only to Terrador in military strategy. He is often calm and collected but has been known to break out into fits of fury, using his fire ability to great effect. He blames himself for everything that has happened to Spyro and Cynder and carries that guilt throughout the series. As a Master of Fire he is competent in all fire techniques and can quickly dispatch his enemies with little effort. His ability to explode in rage makes him a perfect beserker for the blazing heat of burning battles. He is known to be one of a few dragons that can see visions in special vision pools and can also provide protection from fire and other sources of heat by generating a blue aura around himself and any others in the near vicinity of him. His faith in Spyro is utterly unwavering and he is a devout believer in the Ancestors, truely believing that Spyro is nature's way of balancing itself against Malefor's evil.

He is the leader and most dedicated of the four Guardians, he is still haunted by failures of his past and seeks to redeem himself. Equally capable of warmth, rage, and long smoldering bouts of shame, resentment, and regret, he keeps his distance from the other three Guardians, Volteer, Cyril, and Terrador. However, when the time comes he is only too glad to enlighten others and stoke the embers of hope and stand in the face of fire that others might burn even brighter. He is also seen as a father figure to Spyro.

Story

A New Beginning

Ignitus was one of the four Guardians who guarded the Dragon eggs inside the Dragon Temple. He knew that the prophecy said that a purple Dragon (Spyro), born only once for every ten generations, will bring hope to the world and redirect fate in the era. Ignitus feared that the Dark Master knew of the prophecy as well and will send his Dark Armies to the Temple at any momment. When the Temple was under attack, Ignitus escaped with the purple Dragon's egg and let it drift down the Silver River and flew back to the Temple.

Years passed and Spyro, who was off to find his real home, found a distraught Ignitus hidden in a cave. He was pleased that Spyro is alive, but he feared that was too late. He also told Spyro that he is a purple dragon and that the Temple is occupied by their enemies, led by a large black Dragon named Cynder, their war was lost. Spyro convinced Ignitus to take him to the Temple, and they drove the enemies out. Ignitus taught Spyro how to master the element of fire, how to fly, and sent Spyro to find the other Guardians.

When Spyro rescued Terrador, the Earth Guardian, Cynder attacked Spyro, but Ignitus intervened to fight Cynder, but was captured. Cynder took Ignitus to her lair, where he was confined and his powers was being drained inside a crystal. When Spyro freed Ignitus, he told Spyro the truth about Cynder. When Cynder opened the portal, he feared that it was too late, but Spyro refused to give up and Ignitus prayed for him as Spyro flew off.

The Eternal Night

When the Temple was under attack by Gaul's army, Spyro, Ignitus, and the other Guardians fought to protect it. After the invasion, Ignitus tried to find Cynder in the Pool of Visions, but found a vision of Spyro at the base of a great tree. Ignitus was shocked, as well as the other Guardians, that The Chronicler sent these visions to Spyro. When the Guardians gathered to see the Celestial Moons coming together, Ignitus sent Spyro to the Ancient Grove to find the great tree, while he stayed behind at the Temple to search for Cynder.

Dawn of the Dragon

Ignitus has also grown three years older, and his voice has become huskier, though he is still played by Gary Oldman. He waits at the dragon city along with his fellow Guardians for Spyro, Cynder, and Sparx to return. Once they return, he helps in repelling the attack on Warfang. He also hatches a plan to intercept The Destroyer, a creature hell-bent on the destruction of the world before Malefor realises that the city is undefended. Every plan fails, and he tries to escort Spyro and Cynder through the belt of fire, and into the Burned Lands, Malefor's Realm, but he dies in the attempt, though Spyro and Cynder survive. He gives Spyro the encouragement and wisdom for the Time Fury and at the end of the game, he is rewarded by his spirit becoming the new Chronicler for the era.
