Apes are soldiers in service of the Dark Master, Malefor.
Service to the Dark Master
After the Dark Master was cast out of the Dragon Realms, he built a army of Apes and taught them how to artificially harness the power of the gems, the Dragons lifesource. The Apes served as the army for the Dark Master. Their king was Gaul. His army's job was to fight battles againts the dragons,win battles in order to gain ground, occupate the Dragon Realms and destroy Spyro's egg. Their army consists of soldiers, captains and commanders, etc.
