The Apes served as the army for the Dark Master. The last king of the Apes was Gaul. His army's job was to fight battles against the dragons, win battles in order to gain ground, occupate the Dragon Realms and destroy Spyro's egg. Their army consists of soldiers, leaders and commanders, etc. They can also mount on the bat-like Dread Wings.

Ranks
The Apes seem to have ranks, but the Ape King, Gaul, rules the Apes. Gaul's assasin is also an Ape, but it wears a mask.
