Template:Youmay The ability to breathe elements other than fire has been a part of the gameplay in the Spyro series since Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly.
Original Series
Fire breath seems to be the most common element. However, other elements can be acquired by using Powerup Gates or magic spells. In the spin-off Advance series, other elements can be obtained by means ranging from spell scrolls to hot peppers.
Fire
The most common element. Fire has been Spyro's primary attack in every single game. It is usually used to melt ice or defeat enemies that are too big to charge, but it does not effect metal. In the spin-off game, Spyro 2: Season of Flame, it is said that the Dragons use fireflies to gain fire breath, and without them, the Dragons can only breath ice. Fire breath can be increased temporarily with a Super Flame Powerup.
Water
Water seems to be A Hero's Tail's replacement for bubble breath, as both attacks cannot harm enemies. Water breath was given to Spyro by the fairy Aqua after he saved her from Ineptune. It will only slow down most enemies but can kill fodder, Phoenixes, and Fire Imps. Water breath's primary use is to solve puzzles involving water wheels.
Bubble
This breath cannot harm enemies or kill fodder. In fact, the only purpose of the bubble breath is to capture dragonflies in bubbles. It can also break open butterfly jars. Spyro learns bubble breath in Enter the Dragonfly, but never uses it afterwards.
Electricity
Spyro first learns this element in Enter the Dragonfly, where he uses it to power machinery and open a locked gate that blocked the way to other levels. In A Hero's Tail, Spyro regains this ability after unknowingly rescuing the fairy named Amp from Gnasty Gnorc. It serves much the same purpose in this game as in the last game. Electricity breath can be obtained in Season of Flame with a Powerup Gate. In Spyro: Attack of the Rhynocs, Spyro gains this ability after Moneybags gives him a magic battery as a reward for saving him from Butler.
Ice
Spyro first uses Ice Breath in Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!, where he uses a Super Freeze Powerup to freeze trolls and ring the bells in Cloud Temples. In Spyro: Year of the Dragon, the Ice Fairies give Spyro ice breath while he remains in Frozen Altars. Later, in Enter the Dragonfly, Spyro gets a more permanent ice breath. Ice breath reappears in A Hero's Tail and Shadow Legacy. Ice breath's most common use is to freeze enemies to be used as stepping stones to reach otherwise inaccessible areas. Frozen enemies can be defeated with a charge, no matter how big they are. In the spin-off game Season of Flame, Spyro's fire breath is replaced with ice and he has to collect fireflies to regain his fire. In Attack of the Rhynocs, a fairy gives Spyro a spell scroll that gives him ice breath for heating the Fairy Library.
Wind
Spyro starts the game Attack of the Rhynocs with wind breath already learned, although the game never explains how. At the start of this game, wind breath pushes Spyro backwards, but cannot harm enemies. Later, in the Rabbit Habitat, Uncle O' Hare gives Spyro a magic top that allows his wind breath to create tornadoes that can harm enemies. Moneybags later gives Spyro a magic battery that allows him to charge up his wind breath for a more powerful electricity breath, making electricity an extension of wind.
Sheep
This breath is a joke in Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy. It can only be unlocked by entering a cheat code. Sheep breath is exactly the same as fire breath, only that a sheep flies out of Spyro's mouth.
Skylanders series
As some of the Skylanders are Dragons, they have the ability to breathe different breath elements. Unique to this game, however, is the division of elements between dragons. Whereas in the previous two series, when Spyro controlled multiple elements, in Skylanders, he breaths fire exclusively, like in the first Spyro game. Other breaths are used by different dragons who are associate with different elements.
Fire
This breath has only been used by Spyro and Sunburn (so far). Its function is similiar to the fire breath in The Legend of Spyro. That is, primarily for combat. The breath can be upgraded by leveling up both dragons. (Note: While characters such as Ignitor can use Fire, they are not dragons and don't breathe it, so it counts as a seperate ability. Meaning that even a character like Eruptor, even with his Lava Barf Wow Pow and Magma Balls, wouldn't count.)
Magic
Magic is Spyro's element, though he is only shown using it's abilities in the Webgame.
Electricity
This has been used exclusively by Zap, who also wields water abilities, and Cynder. The electricity element can be upgraded by leveling up Zap and Cynder. Shadow Lightning is also usable by Dark Spyro in the 3DS Version.
Water
Like electricity, this elemental breath is also used and manipulated by Zap. It seems to be his primary element, as Zap is a water-type character. It can be upgraded by leveling up Zap. (Note: While characters such as Gill Grunt can use water, they are not dragons and don't breathe it, so it counts as a seperate ability.)
Ice
Ice is another ability used exclusively by Zap, but only in the Webgame. He doesn't breathe it though.
Wind
Air is used exclusively by Whirlwind, it can be upgraded along with her. However, she doesn't 'breathe' air, but uses her horn and wings instead.
Shadow
Shadow is an ability used by Cynder, as part of the Undead element. It involves dashing through the ground as a shadow and summoning Ghosts in her wake, but it isn't a breath attack.
Earth
This element is used by Bash and Flashwing. It mostly involves using the manipulation of the ground to overpower and scatter enemies. Bash doesn't breathe Earth directly, but he does manipulate the ground around him to create rock pillars or launch stones at enemies. Flashwing also doesn't breathe Earth directly, but instead fires it from her tail and wings, similar to Whirlwind.
