The Guardians are dragons who are responsible for watching over the Dragon Eggs, training young dragons in the ancient ways, and presumably other things, as well in the Legend of Spyro series.

Not to be confused with Dragon Elders, the Guardians only appear in the Legend of Spyro trilogy. There is one Guardian for each element, although there is no Guardian for Wind (it is never explained why). It is likely that the Wind Guardian was killed in the events prior to A New Beginning along with many other Guardians during the war between Malefor's forces.

History

During the war between the Dark Master's forces, many Guardians were lost, leaving only four Guardians remaining, Ignitus, Terrador, Cyril, and Volteer, who are also few of the many main characters in the The Legend of Spyro series.

The Guardian of Fire

Ignitus is the master of Fire. He can do, or used to do, very powerful fire attacks, but, as it is shown in A New Beginning, doing a fury attack is difficult for him and it takes a lot more time for him to recover since he is more elderly. He is also Spyro's father figure and mentor in the Legend of Spyro series.

In A New Beginning, Ignitus trained Spyro in the art of fire and combat, discovered the location of the other captured Guardians, and fought off Cynder to protect Spyro.

In The Eternal Night, he was surprised that Spyro has been contacted by the Chronicler and sends the young dragons to seek him out while the Fire Guardian stayed behind to search for Cynder when she ran away.

In Dawn of the Dragon, Ignitus led the attack on the Golem and the Destroyer, and helped give Spyro and Cynder time to flood the canyon to try to stop the Destroyer from escaping and completing the circle. Tragically, Ignitus dies while using his powers to shield Spyro and Cynder from the heat of the Belt of Fire that surrounded the Burned Lands in order to confront Malefor. After Spyro defeated Malefor and reconstructed the world, Ignitus' spirit was chosen to be the next Chronicler, watching over Spyro and Cynder's futures.

The Guardian of Ice

Cyril is the master of Ice. He is very arrogant and proud, and he and Volteer argue a lot and it's usually up to Ignitus to stop them. After Spyro saved him on Tall Plains, Cyril trained Spyro to use his ice breath. In Dawn of the Dragon, he saved Spyro and Cynder from being crushed underneath Golem's swinging tail only to be smashed into a bridge by it. He recovered later after the Golem's defeat, and later helped Ignitus and the Army against the Destroyer.

The Guardian of Earth

Terrador is the master of Earth. He is second in command, and the most militant, however, in Dawn of the Dragon, after Ignitus dies, Terrador supposedly takes the role as the leader of the Guardians. Terrador is the most calm of the Guardians, and trains Spyro to use his Earth breath and master his fear in facing Cynder. He also helps fight the Golem in Dawn of the Dragon. Within the range of Attack Power, Terrador seems to be the strongest.

The Guardian of Electricity

Volteer is the master of electricity. He talks a lot about nothing, usually using big words while doing so. He and Cyril argue a lot and its usually up to Ignitus to stop them. Volteer seems very energetic for his age, although in Dawn of the Dragon, he sounded more tired than usual. He taught Spyro to use his electric breath.
