Template:Characterbox Wyverns are a new type of grublin-like enemy in The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon, and are part of Malefor's Army. They resemble dragons, but have a dark red body, wings that stretch from the back of their arms to their tail, and three pairs of insect-like legs. Their origin is unknown, as they may be a type of dragon but were altered, or they could have some dark agreement to Malefor for their service.

Wyverns also serve as possibe replacements for the Apes' Dreadwings, only without riders perched on their backs (though a concept art piece of a Wyvern being ridden by a Grublin soldier was seen, but never made it in the final version of the game).

Role

The Wyverns first appeared when Spyro and Cynder were defending the Cheetah Village against the Grublins. After defeating the first wave of Grublins, Sparx caught sight a group of flying creatures heading towards them and recognized them as dragons, cheering that they were going to be saved, since dragons are on the side of good. However, upon close inspection, they weren't dragons at all, but grublin-like creatures that only resembled dragons, and Sparx panicks upon this realization. Their alignment with the Grublins became clear, when the Wyverns joined them on their assault against the cheetahs, Spyro, and Cynder.

They later appeared in cutscenes during the battle in Warfang, aiding the army of Grublins in their attack, and are later battled at the Dam, trying to stop Spyro and Cynder from filling the canyon the Destroyer was in with water to slow it down. The Wyverns make later appearances in the Burned Lands and in the Floating Islands. One Wyvern even appeared as an Elite Enemy.

Tactics

Wyverns are tricky enemies, since they have the ability to easily avoid attacks while airborne thanks to their slender bodies. They have the ability to screech out rays of dark energy at their targets and use various attacks. Wyverns need to be struck down from the air to ground level in order to attack them directly.

Trivia

  • In aerial combat, over water or lava, a blast of Cynder's Wind element will send the disoriented Wyverns spiraling and falling to their deaths the instant they touch either lava or water.
  • Given that its earlier design had a rider perched on its back, the Wyvern may be a Grublin-version of the Ape's Dreadwings.
