Wyverns are a type of Grublin species in The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon that resemble dragons.

Characteristics

Physical Appearance

Wyverns are red Grublins that visually resemble dragons. However their overall appearance take after their Grublin origins, being composed of earth, vegatation and minerals.They have red wings between their limbs with bramble-like spines running along their backs, and they possess glowing, bulging red eyes like their Grublin brethern. They also have insect-like legs at the base of their tails. When airborne, they fly through the air like serpents.

Tactics

Wyverns are tricky enemies, since they have the ability to easily avoid attacks while airborne thanks to their slender bodies. They have the ability to screech out rays of Fear energy at their targets and use various attacks. Wyverns need to be struck down from the air to ground level in order to attack them directly.

Story

Wyverns first appeared when Spyro and Cynder were defending the Cheetah Village against the Grublins. After defeating the first wave of Grublins, Sparx caught sight of a group of flying creatures heading towards them and recognized them as Dragons, believing that they were going to be saved. However upon close inspection, they were discovered to not be Dragons at all, but creatures that only resembled Dragons, and Sparx panicked upon this realization. Their alignment with the Grublins became clear when the Wyverns joined them on their assault against the Cheetahs, Spyro, and Cynder.

Wyverns later appeared in cutscenes during the battle in Warfang, aiding the army of Grublins in the seige. Spyro and Cynder battled them at the Dam when the enemies were trying to stop them from slowing the Destroyer down. The Wyverns made later appearances in the Burned Lands and on the Floating Islands. One Wyvern even appeared as an Elite Enemy.

“These winged monstrosities bear some visual similarities to dragons, but those resemblances end with their appearances. Sworn servants of the Dark Master, Wyverns will stop at nothing to destroy Spyro and his allies. Travelling in small packs and using a combination of diving strikes and the Siren Scream breath attack, Wyverns are a troublesome lot.”

Trivia

• Originally for the console versions, the Wyverns were colored gray based on concept art, but their color had to be changed to red due to the broken game render and the outdated game engine.
• In aerial combat, over water or lava, a blast of Cynder's Wind element will send the disoriented Wyverns spiraling and falling to their deaths the instant they touch either lava or water.
• Given that its earlier design had a rider perched on its back, the Wyvern may be a Grublin-version of the Ape's Dreadwings.
