- “There was once a dragon, long ago, whose raw power was far greater than anyone had ever seen or... could imagine. At first, he mastered fire... which was odd because he was not a fire dragon. Then came ice and wind... and other abilities none thought possible.”
- – The Chronicler, The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night
In The Legend of Spyro reboot, Purple Dragons are a rare and special breed of dragon. Prophecies spoken among the Dragons foretell that Purple Dragons are said to be born once every ten generations.
Characteristics
Abilities
Purple Dragons hold the ability to harness the power of all of the elements (Fire, Ice, Earth, Electricity, Wind, etc.), while all other Dragons are capable of breathing only one particular element. This breed of dragon is also capable of mastering powers that weren't possible to Dragons, including time itself. The true, signature ability of the Purple Dragon is the element of Aether and its Dark counterpart. They obtain this power after mastering the four primary elements of Fire, Electricity, Ice and Earth.[1]
Malefor has also stated that he is eternal, which may be another ability that Purple Dragons possess, making them immortal.
Notable Purple Dragons
Throughout Dragon history, there have only been two known Purple Dragons, Malefor and Spyro. The Chronicler claimed Malefor to be the first Purple Dragon, though this fact has been challenged by Malefor himself, who assured Spyro that there were many before him.
Role
Prophecies foretell that the destiny of the Purple Dragon is to direct the fate of an era. Malefor believed that their destiny was to destroy the world, with a new one being remade in his image. However despite what Malefor stated, he abandoned his true calling and embraced the darkness, which twisted his views of the Purple Dragon's destiny.[2][3] Unlike Malefor, Spyro saved the world instead. It should be noted that while Malefor needed the Destroyer to bring about what he saw was the destiny of the purple dragon by destroying the world, Spyro was capable of undoing the Destroyer's devastation with only his power.

Trivia
- According to Jared Pullen, the purple dragon featured in the image above is a full grown version of Spyro.[4]
- According to Volteer in The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning, before Spyro's time, there were rumors and myths of a purple dragon countless generations ago. This foreshadows Malefor’s existence in the sequel.[5]
