This game also introduced black Spirit Gems. These gems absorb green magic gems and seem to power the Golems. Spyro and Cynder attack the Destroyer by smashing his dark gems. These gems also power the Siege Towers during the battle at Warfang, and several appear scattered throughout the Burned Lands and Floating Islands .
Gameplay
Individual Gems
In all three games, each smaller colored gem gives a different benefit:
*Red: increases HP
*Green: increases Mana
*Blue: increases XP
*Purple: increases the Fury Meter
In the first two games, defeated enemies drop every type of gem. In Dawn of the Dragon, they drop green gems based on how many hits Spyro or Cynder made in one combo.
Gem Clusters
In the first game, gem clusters appear glowing pink and release all types of gems when smashed. However, in the other two games, the clusters appear as a one color, corresponding to the color gems they release. In Dawn of the Dragon, there are a set number of Blue Gem Clusters in each level needed for 100% completion.

Spirit Gems are a type of gem cluster that only appeared in The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning that give out red (health), green (mana), blue (experience points) and purple gems (fury energy). They are found repeatedly throughout the game. Spyro first encountered a Spirit Gem within the old confines of the Dragon Temple. After smashing the gem, the young dragon remarked that he felt like he "had to hit it," and when he did, "the power of a thousand suns surged through [his] body," much to the bafflement of Sparx. Ignitus later explained that the Spirit Gems are a gift from the dragon ancestors.

In The Eternal Night, the Chronicler told Spyro how Malefor taught the Apes to artificially harness the power of the Spirit Gems for their evil purposes. Not only were the Spirit Gems a gift from the ancestors, but they serve as the Dragons' lifeforce.

Locations and uses

Spirit Gems are found around the Dragon Temple, Dante's Freezer, Tall Plains, Munitions Forge, Concurrent Skies and the otherwordly realm of Convexity. They are used to replenish Spyro's health, breath energy, fury energy and experience points.

In The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night and Dawn of the Dragon, Spirit blue gems appear as a separate gem cluster that only grant Spyro experience points. In the latter game, they serve as collectibles.
