Story
The water there is about toe deep and in some parts possibly knee deep. Large mushrooms grow there and they almost look like trees. It is filled with groves, vines that block paths and old passage ways shaped like dragon heads. It sits at the edge of the Silver river and encircles the Dragon Temple.
As the purple dragon's egg floated down the Silver River, it came to rest near the shore where it was discovered by a family of dragonflies, Flash and Nina. The egg soon hatched, and the baby purple dragon was eventually adopted by the dragonflies, and was named Spyro. On the same day Spyro hatched, Sparx was also born, and the two grew up together like brothers.
Twelve years later, Spyro and Sparx were playing hide and seek when they are suddenly attacked by Apes. During this attack, Sparx was about to stepped on by the Ape leader, causing Spyro to react by breathing fire out of impulse. The dragon then used his new firepower to defeat the remaining Apes and free Sparx when the Ape Leader fled. That night, Spyro and Sparx told their parents, Flash and Nina, about what happened, and Spyro was told that he was not a dragonfly himself, but a stranger from a distant land. Spyro decided to leave the Swamp soon afterwards in search of his true home; Sparx, though reluctant at first, decided to follow along. Spyro was soon pursued by hostile forces of the Apes, but eventually came into contact with a distraught Ignitus, who although pleased that Spyro is alive, feared that with the Dragon Temple under occupation by their enemy, led by a large black dragon named Cynder, their war was already lost.

Most of the inhabitants are bugs. There are toad weeds, living weeds that have a tongue which they use to catch small insects. There are also Bulb Spiders, massive plant like spiders. The strongest are Vine Ogres. They are massive ogres made out of vines. They attack with kicks, clubs and fists. There are also Dragonflies. The only ones who were seen were Flash, Nina and Sparx. Flash and Nina are Sparx's parents. Spyro lived there for the most of his life because Sparx parents found him on the edge of the Silver River because Ignitus sent his egg down the river to save him from the Dark Master. They took him in as their adopted son. He leaves the swamp after he learned that he wasn't their real son. Sparx follows him.

This the first level of the game. Spyro and Sparx are both seen playing Hide and Seek as Ignitus narrates. Ignitus explains how Spyro was found by Flash and Nina and how they adopted him as their own son. Coincidentally, Sparx was born on the same day that Spyro was hatched. Ignitus described the two as 'an oddly matched, yet compatible pair of brothers that the world has never seen'. He also explains that Spyro did not know that he was a Dragon, but instead thought he was a big purple Dragonfly.

After finding Sparx behind a tree, Sparx changed the normal rules of the game so that Spyro had to catch him. Sparx flies off to another part of the Swamp. Spyro follows but it then stopped in front of a row of vines, which couldn't support his body weight. Sparx taunts him about not being able to fly, which aggravates Spyro to charge over the vines and catch up with Sparx. Sparx kept taunting Spyro and accidently ended up in the stomach of a Frog Weed. Sparx asks Spyro to help him out, but Spyro comments sarcastically that 'Frog Weeds need to eat too'. After Sparx's pleading, Spyro whacks the Frog Weed and releases Sparx. Sparx flies into Spyro's chest and falls to the ground. He continues taunting Spyro and flies off. Sparx eventually leads Spyro to a dead Snake's head. Spyro tells Sparx that they aren't allowed in there, but Sparx ignores his warning and continues. Spyro is forced to the break the head and follow him inside.

After catching up with the dragonfly, Sparx is captured by apes. Spyro battles with them to get to Sparx. After Sparx taunted the larger ape, he gets frustrated and tries to smash Sparx's cage. Spyro became angry and unleashed flames from his mouth. The ape barely avoids getting toasted and tells the other apes that he was going to report to Cynder. Spyro finishes off the other apes with his new fire breath and rescues Sparx. Sparx comments about how Spyro almost burnt him and then realizes that he can breathe fire.

The pair hurry back home to tell their parents. Sparx exaggerates the story and tells them how Spyro ejected flames from his mouth. Flash and Nina give a worried look and Sparx takes it that they don't believe him. Spyro then adds his comments in as well. Flash tells them that he believes them but he knew that 'the time' had come. Spyro questions what he meant and he explains to him that he was an exile from an unknown distant land. Spyro asked if that meant he wasn't their real son but Nina assures him that he's still their son but he just came from somewhere else.

Spyro leaves in the intention of finding his home.Sparx complains about Spyro leaving him behind and then flies off, upset. Flash reassures him that he will get to see Sparx when he comes back. Spyro starts to get upset and Flash tells him to stay brave and strong and use to use his breath wisely. Nina tells Spyro to ignore his father's 'preaching' and to just be himself.

Spyro continues on his journey, sulkily, across the swamp. A few apes started to follow him and scared him enough for him to run away. After travelling through the Swamp, Sparx finds Spyro. After a talk with Flash, Sparx decides that he belongs with Spyro and joins him. Spyro continues through the swamp, while fighting off some apes and vine ogres and finds himself near a cave. Spyro walks towards the cave but is frightened by a hissing noise made by Cynder. They both freak out and run into the cave. Spyro and Sparx eventually find Ignitus.

Ignitus is surprised to see the purple dragon alive and well. But he is says that it's too late for anything to happen now. Spyro questions him on what he was and whether he knew him. Ignitus tells Spyro that he is actually a dragon and how he failed to protect Spyro and the other three Guardians. He explains to them who the Guardians were, what their job was and the fact that the Dragon Temple and the Grotto were now overrun by apes. Spyro asks if he can go to the Temple, but Ignitus is afraid of what might be in the Temple. Ignitus says that the apes were after Spyro and he queries why they were after him. Ignitus explains how the Purple Dragon was born once every ten generations and how the prophecies spoke of that dragon ridding the world of evil. He explains about the war between the dragons and The Dark Master's forces and how Cynder captured the other Guardians. As Ignitus describes Cynder, Sparx says that it sounds like the 'thing' that was chasing them before. Ignitus tells them that she still searches for him and how he hides in the cave from her, think of the things that might have happened. Spyro starts to encourage Ignitus to give him the first step to help. Ignitus eventually accepts and leads Spyro and Sparx into the Forbidden Swamp.

After helping Ignitus through the swamp, the trio finally get to the Temple door. After Spyro opened the door, a group of apes emerged from a cave. The Ape Commander says that there was no escape for Ignitus now and starts to attack. Ignitus tells Spyro to stand back and leave it to him. Ignitus attacks the apes with a mixture of melee and his fire breath. Eventually Ignitus got up to the point where he had to unleash his Fire Fury. The apes are quickly defeated, but the effort left Ignitus exhausted. Spyro asks if he was alright and he replies that he was fine, but it took long for him to recover because of his age. Spyro asks if Ignitus can teach him how to do the Fury and he replies by saying he would teach him soon and leads Spyro into the Dragon Temple.
The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night
This is, again, the first level of the game. Spyro goes in to the swamp to search for Cynder who ran away from the temple because she felt guilty for all the pain and suffering she caused. After Spyro woke up after the Chronicler called him to restore the Power of Fire within him, the temple was atacked by the ape army. Spyro fights through the swamp and reaches the Burning temple. After fighting an assassin, the apes retreat.

Trivia

 • After A New Beginning, the Swamp isn't revisited again for the remainder of the series.
 • A story mistranslation or error in dialogue in The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon has Hunter of Avalar heavily imply that the temple Malefor took over was the Dragon Temple.[1] Because of this error, fans believed that the Swamp that surrounded the Dragon Temple was decimated into the Burned Lands. However, it was revealed years later that Malefor took over and suspended Warfang's city temple in another region of the realms.[2] It is unknown what condition the Swamp was in before and during the events of Dawn of the Dragon.
