We are given a look at this when he showed hostility towards Spyro and Sparx when he mistook them for enemies working for Cynder and the Conductor, and this behavior is due to the dark times he's enduring with his fellow Manweersmalls imprisoned and Cynder and her army taken over Munitions Forge.
