Dragonfly
Template:Characterbox Dragonflies are a crucial part in the Dragon society. A number of dragonflies appear throughout the Spyro the Dragon series, including Spyro's sidekick, Sparx. In the Classic series, they all talk in a kazoo-like voice.
Sparx
Throughout the Original series, Spyro is accompanied by a small yellow dragonfly named Sparx. Most dragonfly attributes that are known are from Sparx.
Spyro the Dragon Series
Throughout Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage and Spyro: Year of the Dragon, Sparx helps Spyro collect treasure, and also functions as a sort of living health meter: whenever Spyro is hit by an attack, Sparx changes color (from gold to blue to green) to reflect Spyro's weakened condition. If Spyro takes enough damage, Sparx disappears entirely, and Spyro will lose a life if injured again. Spyro can recover health by locating and killing certain small creatures called fodder placed throughout a level. After the fodder is killed, a butterfly will appear in its place and Sparx can eat it. If Sparx has disappeared due to sustained injuries, he will appear instead of a butterfly.
In the Year of the Dragon, Sparx appears as a playable character, with four Gauntlet style levels. In these levels, Sparx must defeat enemies and their homes, get keys to open gates for new areas, and defeat a boss at the end, he defeats enemies by using a special beam which comes out of his mouth, by eating more Dragonflies he can breath different beams. After one of these levels is completed, Sparx will gain atleast 1 special ability which include picking up gems from greater distances, pressing L1, R1, R2 and L2 for sparx to point to left over gems, an extra hit point (Sparx shines more), being able to open crates by himself, and being able to warp to any level, any time.
Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly
Sparx does the same thing as in the originals, except he does not continue to have the powers he earned in the Year of the Dragon. Also, we get a better understanding of Dragonflies in Enter the Dragonfly. It appears that when a dragon is born, it recieves a Dragonfly to protect it. 90 protector Dragonflies appear in Enter the Dragonfly, which all got scattered around the Dragon Realms by Ripto. By the facts of Enter the Dragonfly, we can also see that dragonflies can be caught by bubbles and that Sparx is a rather small or thin Dragonfly compared to the others.
Spyro: A Hero's Tail
Sparx appears as a health bar once again. It appears that not only do dragonflies (refering to Sparx) have the normal kazoo voice, but they can also talk. It also reveals that dragonflies are the only ones who can use certain items, such as lock picks. Players can also buy upgrades for Sparx from Moneybags such as holding 3 lock-picks at one time and being able to withstand an extra hit (red after green).
The Legend of Spyro Series
In The Legend of Spyro series, only three dragonflies were shown, Sparx and his parents, Flash and Nina, however, they appear to be much different. If we reference to Sparx, we can see that dragonflies, in the Legend series, do not change colour once hit, and Sparx also doesn't collect gems or have any special abilities. All Sparx does is fly around with Spyro and appear as a sidekick.
However, dragonflies appear much more intelligent; they speak fluently without any evidence of any kazoo and they are more human-like. They grow up with their parents and aren't chosen as a protection product for Dragons. Sparx is also very sarcastic and silly in the series. The Dragonflies seem to have been neutral during the war.
The Apes also capture dragonflies to use them as lanterns when navigating through the Swamp, as evident when the Ape Leader who attacked Spyro trapped Sparx inside a small cage resembling a lantern.
Skylanders series
In Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, Sparx is the only dragonfly revealed in the game, but is a magic item helping out the Skylanders.
