Dark Vines are spiky tentacle-like plants that sprout out of the ground usually when Dark Gems are placed. They also appear in other locations even after Dark Gems are destroyed, such as Crocovile Swamp.
Dark Vines are usually placed as hazardous obstacles that guard boss lairs, like Gnasty's Cave and Red's Chamber. They can also block off other areas in the realm containing treasure such as: Gems, Light Gems, and Dragon Eggs, and the way to levels. When all the Dark Gems in the realm or surrounding areas are destroyed, the vines will shrivel up and disappear.
Weakness
The only way to defeat Dark Vines is to destroy a nearby Dark Gem (which will allow sunlight to drive off the vines) or to collect all the Dark Gems in the realm. Dark Vines are unaffected by Spyro's flame breath, only withdrawing into the ground before returning to their original position seconds later. Some just cannot be permanently defeated such as the ones in Crocovile Swamp.
Dark Vines seem to hate light as they die when they are exposed to sunlight.
Trivia
- There seem to be two types of Dark Vines those who go into the ground when flamed or shot and those who are barely affected by flame.
- Dark Vines also appear in Blink minigames where they cannot be permanently defeated.
