Template:Characterbox Template:Q Ripto (リプトー Riputō in Japanese) is a short Dinosaur and one of Spyro's greatest enemies in the Spyro series. He wears a cape and uses a sceptre to cast magic in battle. He is a persistent enemy of Spyro, appearing in several games. He also has two minions, Crush and Gulp, who serve him and carry out his orders.

Ripto was the main villain in Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!, Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, Spyro: Season of Flame, and Spyro: Attack of the Rhynocs. He shared this role with Dr. Neo Cortex in Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy.

Personality

Ripto is a despicable madman who only enjoys being a king whenever he succeeds in conquering a world he invaded like he tried to do in Avalar. He is also a nasty, evil wizard who delights in causing all sorts of trouble and havoc with his magic. Like the Forgotten Worlds' evil queen known as the Sorceress, Ripto is also a dictator who typically sends out his minions, Crush and Gulp, to do his dirty work before he's forced to even do it himself.

He hated all dragons because since he was a dinosaur, he was unable to properly use magic like dragons do. This is what lead to Ripto's hatred of dragons, and is the reason why he is so relentless in destroying them. One thing for certain is that he's an ill-tempered villain who despise being called short because of his size like when Spyro called him "shorty".

Story

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!

Ripto, Gulp and Crush in Avalar.

A Riptoc who hated dragons, Ripto had enlisted Crush and Gulp at Molten Crater in order to help him wage war on their race, before he was accidentally warped to Avalar by Hunter. Upon arrival, he set about enslaving the worlds, despite the Super portal being shut down by the quick thinking of Zoe and Elora, who scattered the orbs across Avalar.

Ripto's reign could bring disaster to Avalar, but he was eventually defeated by Spyro, who had been summoned by the Professor from a portal in Glimmer. During Ripto's the final battle, he magically created a mechanized version of Gulp and a large mechanical bird for protection before falling into a pool of lava (how he survived it is still unknown). It was revealed in the epilogue of Ripto's Rage, that he was being used as a toy by one of the Spyro's friends, who is an adult dragon.

Spyro: Year of the Dragon

In the epilogue of Spyro: Year of the Dragon, Ripto and Gnasty Gnorc were holding a summit to discuss "The Spyro problem".

Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly

One year later, Ripto successfully attacked the Dragon Realms, scattering the Dragonflies far and wide. Once again, he was foiled by Spyro during a battle in which he turns into a giant monster.

Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy

Later, he formed an alliance with Dr. Neo Cortex to destroy Spyro and Crash Bandicoot and take over the world but also their enemies allied and defeated them.

Trivia

  • He appeared in the epilogue of Spyro 3 with Gnasty Gnorc discussing the "Spyro Problem". A picture of him can be found, oddly enough, on the underside of Spyro's Skateboard.
  • Also in Spyro 3, a skateboard trick, the Raging Ripto, is named after him. This is performed by doing either two front flips or two black flips and three side rolls, essentially a Gnasty Gnorc with a extra roll. It is the highest scoring trick in the game, giving 3000 points the first time it is performed.
  • As a dinosaur, Ripto apparently has a good sense of smell, as when he arrives in Avalar, he sniffs the air to conclude dragons weren't there. And in Spyro's arrival in Glimmer, Ripto immediately smells Spyro's presence before actually noticing him.

The scepter error
  • Ripto is one of the main villians to make numerous recurring appearances in the Classic Spyro games, despite his apparent defeat in Spyro: Ripto's Rage.
  • Despite the implication that Gulp had swallowed Ripto's Scepter in Ripto's Rage prior to recreating it with the Power Crystal, during the boss fights against Crush and Gulp and the "Gulp Defeated" cutscene, Ripto is actually seen holding his Scepter.
  • Despite Ripto's apparent hate for dragons, one of his servants, Crush, is a riptoc that somewhat resembles a dragon, only his wings are VERY tiny (barely noticable in Spyro 2: Riptos Rage!) and is given a club, and supposedly cannot breathe fire.
  • Emperor Percival Tachyon, the main antagonist in Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, is rummored to be baised on Ripto: they are both evil dictators who hate the species that the protagonist is (Ripto hating Dragons, Tachyon hating Lombaxes).
    • Tachyon also uses a scepter, but it's unknown if he is a wizard, like Ripto.
