The Game Over screen in Spyro Reignited Trilogy

"Game Over" is a recurring video game mechanic.

Overview[edit]

"Game Over" is a message used in video games when the player has run out of extra lives or chances. However, nonstandard Game Overs are sometimes used to punish specific mistakes. The Game Over screen differs from game to game, but the text is usually set against a blank screen, with sad or mocking background music playing. After a Game Over, the player is typically given an option to restart the game from the last save point. There is a Game Over screen in every Spyro game.

Spyro the Dragon[edit]

In Spyro the Dragon, if Spyro receives a Game Over, the game shows a scene with a night background, where letters fall to form the word "Game Over". Spyro then glides in and lands on the "E" of the word "Game". If the player presses Start, gameplay is resumed in the current homeworld, otherwise it returns to the title screen.

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage![edit]

In Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!, if Spyro receives a Game Over, a scene is shown where Spyro flies onto a skeletal structure in what appears to be Skelos Badlands. The text "Game Over" is shown to the left. Once the "press Start" notice has appeared and the player presses the Start button, gameplay resumes in the current homeworld (or Glimmer if Spyro has not yet completed the level).

Spyro: Year of the Dragon[edit]

In Spyro: Year of the Dragon, if Spyro receives a Game Over, a scene is shown where Spyro flies onto a tower in Fireworks Factory. Once Spyro lands, the "Game Over" text and "Press Start" notice are both shown. Just as in the previous two games, pressing the Start button causes gameplay to resume in the homeworld from the level the player went to.

Spyro: Season of Ice[edit]

In Spyro: Season of Ice, both the main game and Dragonfly X each have their own Game Over screen. For the main game, the Game Over screen shows a static background of Spyro in a glacier area, angrily looking at the screen. The "Game Over" notice appears to the left, and the "Press Start" notice flashes below. In Dragonfly X, the final score is shown on a black background with a large, Green "X".

Spyro 2: Season of Flame[edit]

In Spyro 2: Season of Flame, similar to Spyro: Season of Ice, both the main game and the Sparx mode, Sparx Panic, each have their own Game Over screen. The main game's title screen shows Spyro angrily looking at the screen, with the usual "Game Over" and "Press Start" notices displayed on screen. Unlike in Spyro: Season of Ice, the Game Over screen is animated and plays a short theme.

Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly[edit]

In Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, when Spyro loses all of his lives, a scene is shown where Spyro glides and lands onto the ball-shaped structure for the Cloud 9 entrance. Every couple of seconds, Spyro yawns and then scratches himself like a dog. Unlike previous games, pressing Start causes the game to return to the title screen. After a Game Over, Spyro restarts with four lives, and Sparx's health is reset.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy[edit]

In Spyro Reignited Trilogy, if Spyro loses all lives in any of the games, he finds himself in a black screen and stands there for around 30 seconds. The gold text "Game Over" pops up above him. When the wait is over, Spyro automatically returns to the current homeworld, just like in the original games.
