Butterflies are a recurring species in the original Spyro series. A butterfly is released from a fodder if Spyro defeats it. They are as a food source for Sparx, who can eat them to regain an increment of his health; if Sparx is green, eating a butterfly turns him blue, and then eating another turns him yellow. If Sparx is already yellow, eating a butterfly has no effect.

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! marked the debut of blue butterflies, which grant Spyro an extra life. A blue butterfly can be found in every Butterfly Bottle, which Spyro must break to free it. Blue butterflies are also released from every tenth fodder that Spyro defeats.

The Legend of Spyro series

The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night

When Spyro and Sparx got lost in the Ancient Grove, Sparx began eating butterflies, finding them perfectly edible, but then learned they give him indigestion.

Other game appearances

Skylanders franchise

Wild butterflies appear in Skylanders as one of the many creatures who reside in the realm. When an enemy is hit by one of the fireballs blasted by Sparx the Dragonfly, they will turn into a butterfly upon their defeat, allowing the Sparx (or the Skylander depending on the console version) to eat them and regain their health.

Trivia

  • This idea of Spyro killing fodder to release the butterfly seems to be based on the common folklore of the butterfly representing the soul leaving the dead body.
  • Sparx eating butterflies in The Eternal Night references the Classic Sparx eating butterflies to regain Spyro's health.
  • Interestingly enough, real dragonflies eat butterflies.
