The Legend of Spyro 3D/Fourth Script Draft
From the Spyro Wiki, the Spyro and Skylanders encyclopedia
With the release of the fourth draft of The Legend of Spyro 3D script, numerous changes were spotted in the story that is different from The Legend of Spyro source material. It is currently unknown if there were other drafts made after the fourth, since this was the final draft from the movie's writer Daniel Altiere.[1]
Differences
Character Changes
- Nina's name had been changed to Luna.
- Malefor's eyes were red, rather than yellow.
- In general, dragons appeared to have bipedal or semi-bipedal characteristics, such as being able to sit on their hind legs and the use of thumbs.
- Hunter had a sword, as well as his existing bow.
- Two new secondary characters were added: Pox, Malefor's right-hand minion, and Glimmer, Sparx's love interest.
- Mole-Yair became the leader of the Mole tribe instead of only the Manweersmalls, and Exhumor does not appear.
Lore Changes
- Only one Spirit Gem existed, called the Life Gem, a large red crystal with the power to trap the souls of those killed by Malefor or his minions. Every time a soul was added to it, Malefor could use their power; but when shattered, the gem obliterated the current user before regenerating.
- Cynder is also transformed through the Life Gem rather than the corruptive power of Dark Aether.
- Rather than sustaining themselves through Spirit Gems, dragons ate berries and other organic food.
- The dragonflies were a major tribe instead of the lone family in the games, which moved across the Swamp to set up a Glen whenever they were threatened.
- They were also considered siblings of the dragons, and frequent reference is made to their common lineage.
- The Apes made no appearance, and instead Malefor's minions are the Grublins from the start, renamed Gobelins.
- The element of Wind is one of the common elements dragons can master at the Dragon Temple, rather than being considered a rare ability.
- The Mountain of Malefor played no part of the story, as Malefor never died in this adaptation, and the mountain is simply his lair.
- Elves were mentioned and other sentient bugs made small appearances; species never referenced in the games.
Plot Changes
- Possibly because of the nature of the trilogy, the story was truncated into showing both Spyro's origins and Malefor's defeat.
- No mention was made of the dragons' conflict against Malefor after he was cast out over his greed; instead, after he discovered the Life Gem, he suddenly attacked, starting the war.
- All Guardian Dragons intended to escape with the eggs during the siege at the Dragon Temple, but they were killed attempting to fly away save for Ignitus.
- Ignitus invoked the dragons and dragonflies' shared lineage to ask them to guard Spyro's egg, though Flash turned him down at first.
- Ignitus was also incapacitated when he distracted the Gobelins during the dragonflies' escape, and never saw Cynder's egg being stolen.
- Rather than being raised as a lone family in the Swamp, Spyro and Sparx grew up in the populated dragonfly Glen.
- Because Gaul made no appearance, Cynder was brought up by Malefor himself, treated as a pet. He intended to use her power from the start to eliminate Spyro, and sent Pox to find his location in the following years.
