Catbat
Species: Cat/Bat Hybrid
Home World: Skelos Badlands
First appearance: Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!
Latest appearance: Spyro Reignited Trilogy

Catbats are an enemy from Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! in Skelos Badlands. In the introduction cutscene of Skelos Badlands, a caveman was finishing his shack, and was then torched by a Fire Wizard in the realm. The caveman runs off the cliff unknowingly and happens to be suspended by a Catbat, who lets the caveman fall to his doom. The Catbat then makes a strange, evil chuckle.

Characteristics

Physical Appearance

As their name suggests, Catbats are a cross between a cat and a bat, as it makes cat-like noises when attacked. In the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, they resemble more like cats.

Behavior

When Spyro approaches, Catbats spit fireballs as a defense. There is a section where several Catbats are waiting for Spyro and if he manages to defeat them all, it counts as a Skill Point.

Trivia

  • If Spyro flames a Catbat, it will yell out a cat-like shriek and its body will turn black from being singed before disappearing into a Spirit Particle.
  • In the original game, the Catbats have a more reptilian look, with only a few small feline features (e.g., their cat ears and yowls). Their Reignited form shows that they appear to be a bit bigger than originally, and their bat wings are smaller. Their feline features are also enhanced and made much more obvious, looking more like an actual cat with yellow fur, a cat`s tail and whiskers.
  • In Basil the Explorer's Faunus Mortas, there is a creature called Cattus Battus, which is most likely the original design for the Catbat.
