Bob the Flagkeeper, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!

Bob the Flagkeeper, otherwise known as simply Bob or the self-titled Flagkeeper, is a side-quest character in Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!. He is a mischievous being who appeared in Handel's sidequest in Scorch. Prior to the Spyro Reignited Trilogy remake, Bob was originally named Bombo the Flagkeeper or simply Bombo.

Characteristics[edit]

Bob is a genie who wears a white turban and rides on a magic carpet. He is capable of creating and throwing magic bombs.

Story[edit]

In the Scorch realm, Handel gives Spyro the task of retrieving flags the Flagkeeper keeps stealing, giving Spyro an orb as a reward. The Flagkeeper only appears once Spyro has talked to Handel after defeating 20 enemies to activate the superflame powerup. After Spyro does so, he will need to use the superflame powerup to shoot the Flagkeeper off of each flagpole. The Flagkeeper then challenges Spyro to dodge his bombs while trying to get the flag from him. He does this for a total of three rounds, and if Handel gives Spyro the orb, the Flagkeeper will never be seen again.

Other appearances[edit]

Crash Team Rumble[edit]

In Crash Team Rumble, Bob serves as the arena boss for the Forest Run Party Mode level. Similar to his original role in Spyro 2, he fires three green fireballs at the team that knocks them back and deals damage. He must be defeated by repeatedly throwing fireballs back at him before time runs out.

Trivia[edit]

  • When the Flagkeeper speaks in the original game, his mouth does not move.
  • Although Bob's original name appears in the trophy/achievement list and early artworks for the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, his name has been changed to "Bob the Flagkeeper" presumably to avoid alleged racial stereotyping towards Middle Eastern inhabitants (since the game was released two years prior to September 11, 2001, despite the name having no connections to the tragic event).
    • However, the trophy name was eventually changed to "Duck and Cover", and the description now refers to him as "Bob".
    • It's possible that Toys For Bob picked the name "Bob" to reference their developer studio name as well as not to further distance from the already established name "Bombo" as both names start with B.
    • He was also changed to be less human.
