The Hippos are residents who live in the Shady Oasis. They are small, with tiny wings on their backs. Once they eat berries from the Great Berry Bush, they inflate in size, become temporarily invincible, and can smash their way through doors. The main hippo is brown, while the others are blue. However, there are possibly other brown hippos in the Oasis, as another is seen in the ending sequence after Spyro completes Shady Oasis.

- In the original game, even though Grundy is stated to be female, she has a more masculine voice in the Japanese version.
- In the original game they are small. However in Reiginted Trilogy, they resemble more like actual hippos.
- In the Japanese version, the Hippos are known as "Kava" (カヴァ Kavu~a), a distortion of Kaba (カバ), the Japanese word for hippo. Additionally, Shorty, Bruno, and Grundy are respectively known as "Hippo" (ヒッポ hippo), "Bota" (ボッタ botta)and Tamus (タマス tamasu)", which, when combined, is a distortion for the katakana reading of "hippopotamus".
- "Botta" is also a homonym for the act of ripping off or stealing, referencing Bruno's mission for hunting down the Thieves.
