Boss Realms are special realms in which Spyro fights a boss. There is one boss realm per home world.

Spyro the Dragon series

In the Spyro the Dragon series, boss realms are similar to other realms in that they contain gems, a dragon (Jacques had two dragons while all of the others had one), enemies, and of course the boss. Defeating the boss is not necessary in order to advance to the next homeworld. Spyro usually encounters the boss towards the end of the realm, and pursues it along a portion of it.

In subsequent games, boss realms consist of arenas or enclosed areas where Spyro is trapped until he can defeat the boss associated with that realm. Unlike the first game, Spyro must defeat the boss in order to advance to the next homeworld. In Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!, there are no collectables found or rewarded for defeating the bosses. In Spyro: Year of the Dragon, however, you receive a dragon egg for defeating bosses. The battle usually begins immediately unless you do not move, as they won't make any moves to attack you in return. While in Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly there is just one boss realm as there is only one homeworld where you fight Ripto. In Spyro: A Hero's Tail, boss realms are usually the darkest places of the realms. They consist of a passage which goes on until the music changes to a more frightening theme.

Year of the Dragon and Spyro: Season of Ice additionally had mini-bosses that are fought in seperate closed off parts of their worlds.
