Purple Thieves are a type of thief that only appeared in Spyro the Dragon in Gnasty's Loot. They are identical to regular Blue Thieves, except that they carry keys instead of Dragon Eggs. These keys are used to unlock doors and advance in the level. The purple robe may be a reference to purple's economic status.
