History
Over a thousand years ago before the events of Spyro the Dragon, the Dragons originally lived in the Forgotten Worlds, ruling over the land alongside the Sorceress. The Dragons provided the land with their magic. But then one day, a Dragon Elder (Astor in the Spyro Reignited Trilogy) and the Sorceress had a huge argument, and in an act of spite, she casted a spell that banished him and all of the other Dragons to the other side of the world, which would eventually become known as the Dragon Realms.

With the Dragons gone, the Sorceress took full control over the Forgotten Worlds with her army of Rhynocs, terrorizing its citizens in numerous ways. Some residents, such as Sheila the Kangaroo, Sgt. Byrd, Bentley the Yeti and Agent 9 attempted to fight back, but were then captured and scheduled for execution. However, without the Dragons, all the magic in the Forgotten Realms eventually started to dry up. While it was worrisome for the inhabitants, this was especially hazardous to the Sorceress since she needed magic to stay alive. Thus, she had her apprentice Bianca and a few Rhynocs infiltrate the Dragon Worlds to steal all of their eggs, hoping that the hatchlings would restore the magic that was lost. But unbeknownst to Bianca, the Sorceress had actually planned to kill the baby dragons and use their wings for a spell to make herself immortal.

Spyro was sent to the Forgotten Worlds with a few allies to retrieve the stolen dragon eggs from the forces of the Sorceress, each newborn dragon restoring magic to the land along the way. After besting the villain once and later a final time, Spyro fulfills his quest and rescued all the dragons. With the Sorceress finally gone, true peace was restored to the Forgotten Worlds along with its magic.

Description
The Forgotten Worlds consist of four homeworlds, and each one contains six portals leading to five regular realms and a speedway, as well as a certain amount of Dragon Eggs and gems to find and collect. Like in Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!, gems will either be scattered about or hiding in baskets, vases or other containers which Spyro will have to destroy. Dragon eggs will also be present, either resting in plain sight or hidden in certain places.

The individual realms will also have gems and eggs to find, but some eggs will have to be obtained by completing certain challenges for the inhabitants. In each realm, there is at least one egg to collect at the end of each world in order for it to be considered "completed", which is signified by a portal leading back to the homeworld appearing and an inhabitant rushing into it. In addition, a few eggs in some homeworlds and realms are carried by thieves, who Spyro must chase after and defeat in order to claim the egg they have.

In each home world, there are two portals (as well as the speedway besides the first one) that are deactivated due to the fading magic. After Spyro collects a certain amount of Dragon eggs, the portal will activate, allowing him to enter. There is at least one realm in each homeworld and certain areas in other realms that can only be accessed by one of the other playable characters; Shiela, Sgt. Byrd, Bentley and Agent 9. In order to unlock these realms and areas, Spyro must find the realm the character resides in (which basically acts as a tutorial level for said character), where he'll find them in a cage next to Moneybags, who will release them if Spyro pays him a certain amount of gems to free them.

The Speedways function as they did in the previous games, but with some differences: Like before, Spyro will have to either pass through or destroy certain obstacles or enemies at first in a certain amount of time in order to collect gems and a Dragon egg. Afterwards, he will be able to compete with the inhabitants of said speedway in a race for another egg, or free roam to find Hunter in a certain place so that the player can play as him to complete a certain challenge for yet another egg. When Hunter gets captured during Spyro's quest in Evening Lake, he will become unavailable in these speedways as well as in certain realms until Spyro travels to Midnight Mountain.

After completing a realm, the inhabitants that went into the portal leading back will work together to build a mode of transportation for Spyro. Once all five realms have been completed, they will finish the vehicle and Spyro will be able to travel to the next homeworld. Along the way, he will encounter one of the Sorceress' most powerful monsters, which the playable character from before will assist in defeating, and collect a single Dragon Egg after besting them. In the final homeworld, Midnight Mountain, Spyro will instead find a portal which, after collecting a hundred eggs, leads to an arena where he will face off against the Sorceress herself, whom he defeats with Agent 9's help.

Each homeworld will also have a sign showing Sparx left by Zoe, but Spyro will have to wait until later to use it. After defeating the boss of the homeworld, Zoe will appear next to the sign and offer a challenge for Sparx to retrieve a Dragon Egg and some gems by defeating a horde of tiny creatures and their leader.

The Forgotten Worlds[1][2], also called the Forgotten Realms[3][4], is the main setting of Spyro: Year of the Dragon. After mysterious thieves stole the Eggs from the Dragon Worlds, Spyro and Hunter followed after them; the trail lead them to a forgotten land that is reigned by an evil Sorceress, who masterminded the theft of the dragon eggs.
