Dead Mode is a form of glitch found in Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. in Ripto's Rage!, it can only be done in Crush's Dungeon and in Gulp's Overlook, while in YOTD, it can be done in several realms, including Evening Lake. To perform the glitch in Year of the Dragon, the player must go to a realm with lava, or acid, or some sort of damaging liquid, and let Spyro hop up and down on it until he is about to die. Once Sparx is gone, the player must pause the game right when Spyro hits the lava, a signal he has died when the controller vibrates. Then, hit the "Exit Level" option.

This process is done differently in Ripto's Rage!, as Spyro must instead touch the lava and die right before Crush or Gulp is defeated. This is done easily with full health or without Sparx in Crush's Dungeon, as you can wait until the last seconds to let Spyro hit the lava and die before the boss is over, thus preventing the game from resetting the boss's progress. In Gulp's Overlook, it's a bit harder to pull off, as you need to be at full health or have Sparx be blue and touch the lava in order for the glitch to work, as if you touch the lava while Sparx is green or Sparx is gone, the game will restart the boss, with Sparx fully recovered, and the boss's health will be fully healed.

If the player exits the portal underwater, and goes out of the water, they will perform a Swim in the Air glitch. If they exit the portal on dry ground, and enter the water, the game will act as if there is no water, and thus leaving a Game trap.

Trivia

  • In Dragon Shores, with the glitch active, if Spyro hits the softball in the Dunk Tank mini-game, the game will soft-lock, as it normally cycles to the next available target, and since Spyro is presumed to be dead, it assumes that the cycle is paused, and it thus hangs the game.
    • Also, if you enter the Shooting Gallery mini-game while the glitch is active, instead of Spyro's position being changed to face the shooting gallery, the camera will become locked, being positioned towards the Gnorc that is hosting the shooting gallery, and you won't be able to complete the shooting gallery. Weirdly enough, you can still talk to the Gnorc, but it will only reset the mini-game, and the glitch will end, returning Spyro's state to normal and thus allowing the game to be paused again. This will also occur if the Superflame timer runs out in the game.
  • If you manage to perform this glitch in Evening Lake and have already unlocked Honey Speedway, swim underneath the entrance to Bentley's Outpost, and if you have not yet paid Moneybags, you might enter the Outpost. Completing it unlocks Bentley's sub-areas in Bamboo Terrace and Frozen Altars, though the signs say he is still locked up.
