“Hi, Spyro! Each time a fairy zaps you, like this... *zaps* That means your progress is saved.”
Zoe, Spyro: Year of the Dragon

Zoe is an Autumn Fairy[2] who first appeared in Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!, offering Spyro advice and serving as a checkpoint for him throughout each of the realms he visits. She is particularly helpful to newer players and is essentially considered a tutorial.

Physical Appearance

Original Design (1999)

Zoe's overall appearance features her having green eyes, ginger red hair and a fair complexion. In her appearances in Ripto's Rage! and Year of the Dragon, she wears a yellow dress and red shoes. She carries a wand, which she uses to save Spyro's progress within individual realms.

A Hero's Tail Design (2004)

In Spyro: A Hero's Tail and Shadow Legacy, Zoe's appearance has slightly changed. She has a CGI model which depicts her with flats for shoes, and she wears a green skirt and yellow-green top instead of her yellow dress. This model also depicts her with blue eyes and darker hair. Her in-game model appears closer to her original design, except that now her dress has a skirt-like pattern on the bottom, she wears a gold necklace around her neck, and she also is barefoot.

Reignited Design (2018)

In the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Zoe's hair and dress are a bit more orange than red and yellow respectively, with some red and light yellow in her dress which has more features including shoulder pads. Her eyes are more visible with purple eyeshadow, her wings are larger, her shoes are now flats and her skin tone is more yellow, plus she has a glowing aura surrounding her.

Story

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!

Prior to Spyro's unplanned trip to Avalar, Zoe and the others were ambushed by Ripto and his monster goons, Crush and Gulp. Elora quickly instructed Zoe to get the other fairies and scatter the orbs around the Avalar. Ripto grabbed onto the orb Zoe was holding and threatened to kill her as she carried him and the orb away. When Spyro and Sparx arrived in Glimmer, Ripto interfered again, and Zoe distracted him by zapping the evil tyrant. Enraged, Ripto ordered Crush to kill her, but Zoe dodged and Ripto was hit by Crush's club as a result.

During Spyro's journey through Avalar, Zoe aided him at Elora's request, using her power to save Spyro's progress. She was later captured by Ripto and about to be fed to Gulp, but Spyro arrived just in time and saved her from becoming lunch. Zoe has remained on Spyro's side ever since.

Spyro: Year of the Dragon

After Bianca and several Rhynocs stole the 150 Dragon Eggs from the Dragon Realms, Zoe went down a hole with few of her friends (all unseen, but mentioned) and watched as Bianca presented an egg to the Sorceress. She went back and informed a Dragon Elder (Argus in Spyro Reignited Trilogy) about the whereabouts of the eggs. She then joined Spyro, Sparx and Hunter on their quest to bring the eggs back home. In the game's original version, it appears that Zoe and Princess Ami were competing against one another for Sparx's affections.

In the game, Zoe assisted Spyro by giving him many useful tips. She later helps Sparx access and navigate through his challenges.

Spyro: Season of Ice

While Spyro, Sparx, Hunter, and Zoe were enjoying a vacation in Dragon Shores, they received a message for help from Zoe. Grendor had cast an ice spell over all of the Fairy Realms, capturing all the fairies in ice crystals and allowing the Rhynocs to gather them up. Zoe herself was held by Grendor in his lair to help him get rid of his extra head. After rescuing the other 99 fairies, Spyro ventured to Grendor's lair and defeated him, forcing him to free her. Zoe thanked Spyro and used her magic to return Grendor to normal, who promised to never play with magic again.

Spyro 2: Season of Flame

Zoe only had minor appearances in this game, once again saving progress for Spyro, Sheila, and Agent 9 on their quest to rescue the Fireflies from Ripto.

Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly

In Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, Zoe only has minor cameo appearances throughout the game, acting as a checkpoint by zapping Spyro like in previous games. She only speaks once in the whole game, when Spyro first enters Dragonfly Dojo. She was to have a slightly bigger role had the game not been rushed, telling Spyro how to keep Sparx the Dragonfly healthy.[3]

Spyro: Attack of the Rhynocs

A week prior to Attack of the Rhynocs, Zoe got a job at the Fairy Realms as the head librarian. When Spyro and Sparx informed her that Ripto had returned, and they were looking for the Hearts of the Lands to fix the Professor's peephole machine, Zoe revealed that the Heart of the Fairy Library maintains the books, so she couldn't give it to them. However, she also remembered that the Professor had made a maintenance machine for them, but it was never used and the Rhynocs stole it. Zoe gave Spyro and Sparx a list of its parts that had been scattered across the lands. After Spyro and Sparx found all seven parts and returned them to Zoe, she gifted them with the Heart of the Fairy Library.

Spyro: A Hero's Tail

In A Hero's Tail, Zoe only had one line in the entire game. She zapped Spyro multiple times after claiming that her zaps would cause him to "lose a million brain cells." Her role as the tutorial fairy in this game was given to Trina, but she still retained saving Spyro's progress.

Spyro: Shadow Legacy

Zoe appeared in Shadow Legacy with other fairies in her homeland, the Treetops, having been captured and sent to the Shadow Realm. After Spyro freed them, Zoe revealed that the Shadow Realm had greatly affected the fairies, completely draining them of their magic. Fortunately, Spyro soon gathered a cure for Zoe and her friends, four purple Kerfuffle leaves, and the fairies are relieved from the after-effects of the Shadow Realm. Zoe had also lost her wand in this game, but Spyro found it for her.

Mysterious Blonde Fairy

Since Zoe was not introduced until Ripto's Rage!, an unnamed blonde fairy in a red dress served as the checkpoint in Spyro the Dragon. In that game, Spyro's progress within a realm was saved whenever he steps on a freed-dragon platform, and the fairy appeared when he lingers on the platform, allowing him to save his overall progress or replay the dragon.

In Haunted Towers and High Caves, unnamed red-haired fairies in purple dresses kissed Spyro on the nose, which caused him to blush red and temporarily gains the Superflame ability. This enabled him to defeat the metal knights. Also, in Haunted Towers, a blonde fairy in a yellow dress kissed him on the nose, giving him permanent superflame (until he finished the level).

In High Caves, three other yellow dressed fairies rescue Spyro if he falls in the chasm and put him on top of the Supercharge ramp.

Profiles

“Zoe is a fairy who zaps Spyro with her wand every time he comes near her. Each zap saves Spyro's progress. When you progress to a certain point, you will see her hovering around. Go up to her for a quick zap. If you are defeated, you return to the game at the last point where Zoe zapped Spyro last. Zoe also gives you quick gameplay hints on how to operate controls or defeat enemies.”

“Zoe is a fairy who saves Spyro’s progress through the Forgotten Worlds. When you see her, get close and she will zap Spyro with a progress saving spell. The next time Spyro loses a battle, he returns to the last place Zoe zapped him if he has lives remaining.”

Trivia

Zoe's message if an illegal or hacked copy of the game is detected
  • Spyro: Year of the Dragon has a built-in anti-piracy measure in which if Spyro talks to Zoe at a balloon after completing a few realms, she informs Spyro that he is using a pirated copy of the game.
  • In Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!, the pitch of Zoe's voice changes at different points in the game. The higher pitch was an early version of her voice, and the voice clips with this higher pitch were accidentally overlooked in the final build.
  • Her appearance is an inversion of the original Save Fairy design of blonde hair and a red dress.
    • In Ripto's Rage!, Zoe mistakenly appears twice during the "No Dragons, Wonderful" scene. The second Zoe was likely meant to be this fairy, as in Reignited Trilogy a fairy looking exactly like the Save Fairy appears.
  • If Spyro: Year of the Dragon is hacked, she will inform that the player may experience problems associated with the illegal copy of the game they own.
  • According to the European Spyro 2 manual, Zoe is something of a gossiper.[4]
  • Zoe was originally named Sparkle during the development of Spyro 2.[5]
  • Zoe has a few unused lines in Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, implying that she would have originally had a more larger role in the game.
